Martin's Cove and Independence Rock

We had an awesome return trip home to Topeka. We drove to Martin's Cove first. It was in the middle of nowhere! It was so windy, yet hot outside. The pioneer's were walking in the wind while it was freezing cold! I can not imagine it. Devil's Gate is in the background of the first picture posted. I learned that the river runs through it, it is not a trail through the mountains. It was used as a marker on the trail. You can not get to the cove by car. They recommend that you borrow a handcart and walk it. It would have been cool to do that, but we didn't have the time. Walking it would take about 4 hours total. We had to be in Rapid City, South Dakota by that night. We did pull a handcart over to the old fort and the kids loved it. The old fort got burned down, but they have a replica of it on site. It was a great place to visit! Ten miles down the road is Independence Rock. People on the trail called it that because it was said that if you didn't make it to the rock by July 4th, you would run into the winter weather. They would sign their names and the date all over the rock. I left my camera at Martin's Cove, so Stephen took the kids up it while I ran back to get my camera. However, he did not realize that the wind would be even worse at the top of the rock and the five of them nearly blew off!
